Who Wants To Be King Nothing?
Our downfall, as web business owners, is that we always think we know what’s right. After all, it was us that came up with the idea for the site, and it was us that put the time and energy into getting the site designed, brought it all together and got the darned thing online in the first place.
So we know what’s right don’t we?
As I just said, we only THINK we know what’s right.
If, for example, you have set up a company selling bottles of wine delivered direct to homes, you might be confident that you know what keywords to target in your SEO campaign.
Without further ado, you make changes to the content, write a dozen articles and publish them everywhere you can think of, submit your site to online directories, Facebook your face off, all the usual stuff.
After a short while you check Google and Bingo! There you are at the top of the pile.
So why aren’t you getting any traffic? Why aren’t you making enough sales?
The reason could simply be that you targeted keywords that people aren’t really using that much. As a consequence, you’re not coming up very often in the search engine results pages (SERPS).

As you can see the figures vary for each search term (keyword) and the four that you would expect people to be searching for aren’t performing as well as ‘wine by post’

The trick is to make sure you research hundreds of alternatives in order to find one that has good monthly search figures, not too many pages in the SERPS, and for which the sites that are already on top of the SERPS don’t seem overly concerned with their SEO efforts.
This can be difficult to ascertain without knowing what you’re really looking for and of course there are lots of other factors that need to be taken into consideration when deciding the direction your SEO campaign should take.
But if you’re serious about your online business, then you HAVE to be serious about your choice of target keywords.
Never underestimate the internet community’s ability to surprise you, and always take the time and effort that it takes to pick the right search terms; your business will stand or fall on them.
